It is due to :

  • tumour pressing on bones, nerves or organs.
  • related to cancer treatment(chemotherapy, radiotherapy).

Treatment options are :

  • Treatment is done according to WHO ladder in which single drug or combined drugs with appropriate dosage guidelines is given to patients and interventions can be performed in indicated conditions.

3 stage ladder (Pharmacotherapy):

  • 1st stage- NSAIDs +/- NSAIDs
  • 2nd stage-Weak opioid +/- NSAIDs
  • 3rd stage-strong opioid +/- NSAIDs
  • Interventional pain management (IPM) in any stage +/- NSAIDs.

Indications of Interventions in cancer patients:

  • Persisting severe pain
  • Failure of analgesic medicine treatment
  • Limited life expectancy
  • Well localized pain
  • Coexisting or preexisting problems curable with interventions
